Rumor has it there are citizens, particularly voters, who are shocked that a contender for President of the United States is a self-declared atheist, socialist who is keen on communism. However, for conservatives, this is no surprise but rather the inevitable consequence of failing to teach several generations with sufficient profundity the Bill of Rights, the US Constitution and the glory of their premises, failing to illuminate the successes of our economic and political system, misleading our children on primacy of “global citizenship” versus responsibility to American citizenship, and allowing radical, left-leaning ideology to hijack our institutions of higher learning. Ronald Reagan wasn’t hyperbolizing when he stated “freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream.”
The transformation away from everything America was founded to be is underway- the political, the social and economic framework that has allowed for the manifestation of the American idea is truly in a state of compromise. And among the multitude of policies, laws and ideas America is embracing to her own detriment is the normalization of transgenderism.
How Did We Get Here?
It has taken several decades of policy and campaigning to enfeeble the primary institution required for a free, flourishing society- the Institution of the Family. Replacing belief in eternal moral truth (that which is good with that which feels good) has been stunningly effective with the populous. Social policies promoting promiscuity, economic policies encouraging single motherhood and fatherless homes, feminism’s orthodoxy encouraging women to pursue manhood, children’s overexposure to graphic television and video games, government policy luring toddlers away from their parents to government run pre-schools, or teaching comprehensive sex education courses at all levels of schooling normalizing sexual promiscuity even among our youngest; all are contributors to the shift from healthy family life and high standards of morality. The sexualization of children is a current favorite among the social experiments and positioned at the helm is the transgender movement.
First The Facts
The American College of Pediatricians considers human biological sex to be “a biological trait that defines living things as male and female based on the complement of sex chromosomes and the presence of reproductive organs. “XY” and “XX” are genetic markers of male and female, respectively, and are found in every cell of the human body. Sex is established at conception, declares itself in utero, and is acknowledged at birth.” While there are exceedingly rare instances of chromosomal anomalies (occurring in less than 0.02% of births , this does not constitute a third sex or a “spectrum.” In reality sex cannot be changed as it is determined by unalterable chromosomes. One may ingest hormones to induce physical changes or undergo surgery to imitate the opposite sex but one may never become biologically different from assignment at birth.
In order to escape the confines of biological truths, the psychological phenomenon of “gender identity” was conceptualized to decouple sex from its biological moorings. How did this come about?
In the 1950s homosexuality and transvestism were considered rare conditions to be treated with psychotherapy. In collaboration with other “sexologists” at Johns Hopkins University, endocrinologist Dr. Harry Benjamin identified “transsexualism” as distinct from homosexuality and transvestism and suggested it be treated medically versus psychologically. Psychologist Dr. John Money contributed to Benjamin’s research by co-opting the term “gender” from a classification of nouns and applying the concept to “internal sex identity.” What had been known as “transsexual” became identified as “transgender.” There is no scientific basis for a dichotomy between sex and “gender identity,” (such as the idea of a male being born with a female brain), yet this socio-political construct has come to dominate all aspects of American culture.
Yet, despite the absence of factual or scientific grounding, the transgender revolution barrels onward. Western society has adopted and implemented this gender fluid policy on the basis of emotion. Hormone treatments and sex-reassignment surgeries (SRS) are becoming routine not based on medical necessity but simply upon patient demand. Modern medicine is denying the rational, sound distinction between removing damaged or diseased tissue from amputating or extracting healthy organs from someone suffering emotional dysphoria (as is the practice in gender reassignment surgery). The gender fluid orthodoxy asserts that patients know best what is needed to provide for their happiness, including children and adolescents, and the role of psychiatric clinicians is simply to facilitate decision making and determine readiness.
Additionally, at least 19 state legislatures have banned psychological treatment for dysphoria known as “conversion therapy.” This prohibition legally precludes psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists from exploring with patients the underlying cause of their dysphoria. Some therapists hold the politically incorrect position that patients will generally live happier lives if they reconcile with their biological sex yet this position is culturally unacceptable, and in some states is now illegal, leaving “gender-affirming” therapy as the lone path for patients suffering with dysphoria.
What Is the Process?
At its nascence in the 1950s the “sex change” movement was limited to adults. As of 2011 statistically only 0.3 percent of the adult population suffered from dysphoria. However, the recent political and cultural push to normalize gender dysphoria is producing a surge in the number of children and families confronting this issue. In an effort to “educate” children about abnormal sexual orientation, we are in effect teaching them “gender” confusion. This phenomenon is a learned one, and is frankly, abusive. Children from very young ages are insisting they know they are the opposite sex and demand assistance in transforming their bodies.
- social transition whereby the child is encouraged to select a new name and to dress and act as the opposite sex
- puberty blockers (known as GnRH agonists) are taken to suppress natural puberty
- once the patient is deemed mature and has developed physically he or she may begin “hormonal transition” by ingesting physiologically altering cross-sex hormones
- the final step is sex reassignment surgery. Female patients are given hysterectomies, vaginectomies, double mastectomies. New procedures include removing forearm skin from females to create non-functioning replicas of penises or for males, removal of male organs and creating faux vaginal openings which must be held open with a dilator to prevent closure of the wound from natural healing.
These “affirming” surgeries not only battle against normal physiology of the human body but likely have implications on adolescent brain development of which nothing is yet known or understood. What is clearly known and understood is that administration of cross-sex hormones in pre-pubertal children will lead to permanent sterility.
This essay has not addressed the political facets of the transgender movement which is as critically important as understanding the real manifestations of the movement itself because it is the only area where average citizens may impact its cultural proliferation. To be sure, reality will catch up with this madness in a generation and what will be before us then? Christian conservatives observe the cultural, political affirmation of the transgender movement with anguish wondering “how are we allowing this happen?”
